1 Timothy 2: All about Order
- v.1-8 Instructions on Prayer
- v.9-15 Guidance for Women in Meetings
[Chapter 2 Synopsis: All about order: first nationally as we are to pray for all in authority, and then in our gatherings to avoid lots of chitter-chatter.]
v.1-8 Instructions on Prayer
[Passage Synopsis: Pray for all in authority in order to be able to live out the godly peaceable lives for which we were saved.]
v.1,2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people –for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
v.3,4 This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
v.5,6 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.
v.7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle – I am telling the truth, I am not lying – and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.
v.8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.
[Note: Pray for those in authority that we may live in peace, for this is God’s will that in such an environment the gospel may be shared. Maintain the witness of Jesus which is what his ministry is all about. Therefore, his desire is that prayer be at the heart of church life.]
v.9-15 Guidance for Women in Meetings
[Passage Synopsis: Guidance for women in church gatherings to maintain good order.]
v.9,10 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
v.11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.
v.12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.
v.13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
v.14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.
v.15 But women will be saved through childbearing – if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
[Note: Let not women cause upset by fashion consciousness but bless by good deeds, for gentleness and submission are good. Paul sees God’s order as men leading and he takes this from Genesis 2 & 3. Women have a different critical part to play.]
