Galatians 6:
[Chapter Synopsis: in this new life we are here for one another, living by the Spirit and not the flesh [self-centred desires], rejecting the demands of the Jewish Christians wanting us back under the Law but seeing ourselves as new creations in Christ.]
- v.1-10 Doing Good to All
- v.11-18 Not Circumcision but the New Creation
v.1-10 Doing Good to All
v.1 Be there for one another, to restore each other is we get it wrong
v.1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
v.2 Lighten each other’s loads in the love of Christ
v.2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.
v.3-5 Don’t let pride deceive you, check yourselves out for humility
v.3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.
v.4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else,
v.5 for each one should carry their own load.
v.6 Bless the leaders who teach
v.6 Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.
v.7 Remember always, every action has consequences
v.7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows
v.8 So if you go on desires, watch for self-destruction, follow the Spirit and reap life
v.8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
v.9,10 Never give up doing good for you will be rewarded, do good to all, especially the family of God)
v.9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
v.10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
v.11-18 Not Circumcision but the New Creation
v.11-13 Those who want to impress you try to make you conform to law-keeping, to avoid being embarrassed by the Cross, but those who are circumcised can’t keep the Law but they want to boast about you
v.11 See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand!
v.12 Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ.
v.13 Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh.
v.14,15 The Cross is our boast, nothing else counts, just being a new creation
v.14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
v.15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation.
v.16-18 May all who abide by this be blessed, I want no more of that. Be blessed.
v.16 Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God.
v.17 From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.
v.18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.
