Isaiah 12: A continuing song of Praise

v.1-3 It will be a day of new confidence in the Lord

v.4-6 It will be a day when praise will pour forth

[Preliminary Comment: Continuing on from the Messianic picture of an apparently ‘end time’ seen in the previous chapter, two more declarations of what will happen “In that day”, the day of his coming to his people, a new assurance in their relationship with the Lord and a new outpouring of praise.]

v.1-3 It will be a day of new confidence in the Lord

v.1 In that day you will say: “I will praise you, Lord. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me.

v.2 Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.”

v.3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

[Notes: Observe the praise that flows from the peace that he brings. God will be everything to them and so His resources will bring joy.]

v.4-6 It will be a day when praise will pour forth

v.4 In that day you will say: “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted.

v.5 Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world.

v.6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”

[Notes: At that time praise will abound round the earth, expressed in song, praise for God for what He has done.]

Addendum:

[Further Notes: In Chapter 4 we noted the phrase ‘the day of the Lord’, a day of judgment that clears away sin and leaves blessing. We suggested a division of the book from chapter 1 to chapter 12 which covered the sins of Israel and Judah before moving on in chapters 13 to 23 to consider God’s judgment on other nations. It is significant that this first block doesn’t leave us with the gloom of all the judgments that have been considered but, in the last two chapters of the block, take us into the future where the fruit of the work of the ‘Branch’ from the family of David (the Messiah, Jesus), is observed and then becomes the basis for a song of praise. Judgment may come in the present because of the sin that prevails, but the end result of the Messiah is to bring about a state of peace and harmony.]

Having come to the end of 1:1 The Sins of Israel & Judah, we would do well to reiterate the contents of this block that we saw at the end of Chapter 1 and which we have now worked through:

Summary: 1.1 The Sins of Israel & Judah Chapters 1-12

  • Ch.1: God’s intentions towards a fallen nation – warnings about present state
  • Ch.2: The Mountain & Day of the Lord – Jerusalem exalted in the last days, after a time of judgment
  • Ch.3: Judgment on Jerusalem & Judah – what the Lord will do and why
  • Ch.4: A Chapter of Hope – the work of the Branch at the End Time – after judgment, survivors
  • Ch.5: Judgment on the Vineyard – Israel as an unfruitful vineyard and what will follow
  • Ch.6: Isaiah’s Heavenly Revelation & Commissioning
  • Ch.7: Immanuel & Assyria – the speed of judgment
  • Ch.8: Warnings of Impending Invasion as Judgment
  • Ch.9: Light & Darkness – distant blessing, impending judgment
  • Ch.10: Discipline & Accountability – Assyria, the means of discipline and their own judgment
  • Ch.11: The Branch and his work
  • Ch.12: A Song of Praise

Although these were chapters about how God will bring disciplinary judgment on Israel, we have also seen a number of times where reference is made to the distant future (the End Time) when God’s ultimate goal is achieved through the Messiah (the Branch) and Israel are ultimately blessed
